Unique Billing Solutions

At the Law Offices of Karen Stolp Poirier we realize that sometimes you may find yourself in a situation where you need an attorney unexpectedly. This can make it difficult to come up with the funds needed to hire an attorney. We have unique billing solutions to make hiring us more convenient and affordable for you and your family.

In many cases, including certain civil litigation matters, some divorce/custody/child support matters and most criminal and landlord/tenant matters, we will require only a flat fee. That is, we will only require a one-time payment which will cover any and all work we do your case. In many flat fee cases we can arrange a payment schedule over the course of weeks or months in increments that are comfortable and affordable for you and your family.

For all personal injury cases (car accidents, slip-and-falls, dog bites, etc.), and many debt recovery cases, we only collect a fee if we recover money for you. That is, you do not have to pay us any money up front and you only pay us if we win your case.

Retainers and Hourly Billing

Most law firms bill at somewhere between $200.00 an hour to $400.00 an hour. Typically, work is billed in tenths of an hour (6 minute increments.) That is, a phone call lasting 1minute will be billed as 6 minutes and a phone call lasting 8 minutes will be billed as 12 minutes. So, if you have an hourly rate of $250.00 per hour and your attorney places a one minute phone call to Attorney Smith and leaves a voicemail, that phone call will have cost you $25.00. Also, if Attorney Smith then calls and leaves your attorney a voicemail and your attorney then listens to that one minute voicemail, it will have cost you another $25.00. If this happens 4 times, it will have cost you $100.00 before your attorney and Attorney Smith even talk. At the Law Offices of Karen Stolp Poirier, we do not think this is fair or productive for the client.

Likewise, if you are scheduled to be in court at 9:30a.m., it’s not uncommon that, through no fault of either party, that the court does not hear your case for several hours. If your case isn’t called until 2:00p.m., it will have cost you $1,125.00 even though the majority of the time was spent waiting for your case to be called. At the Law Offices of Karen Stolp Poirier, we do not think this is fair or productive for the client.

Unique Retainer and Hourly Billing Solutions

Hourly billing:

Court appearances:

Most court appearances take at least 2 hours. Instead of charging you say, $250.00 per hour for each hour we are in court, we set a flat fee for the first two hours or any part thereof, this is usually somewhere between $300.00 and $500.00, depending on the case. Then, we charge you a lesser amount for any tenth of an hour thereafter, usually about $100.00 per hour. This rate is far lower than most other law firms.

All other work:

All other work, which usually consists of research and the drafting of documents, is billed at an hourly rate that is determined based on your case. This rate is usually between $100.00 and $200.00 per hour, which is far less than most other law firms.

Retainers:

If we require a retainer for your case, we will work with you to make paying the retainer as easy and convenient for you as possible. In many cases we can arrange a payment schedule over the course of weeks or months in increments that are comfortable for you and your family.

Contingency agreement:

What is a retainer?

In certain cases, often divorce or custody/visitation cases, we will ask for a retainer. A retainer is a certain amount of money that you give us that is deposited into our client account. Then, once we begin working on your case, we will bill you semi-monthly or monthly. Instead of you sending us payment for the bill, the amount of the bill is deducted from your retainer. If there is money left in your retainer at the end of your case that money is returned to you. If your retainer runs out, then we will either request another retainer or just send you a bill. We will always do our best to work with you and make the process as painless and affordable as possible.
